John Woo to direct WWII movie
Hong Kong director John Woo famous for his stylo-mylo, slow-mo, choreographed movies, has landed a new project in the China Mainland.
He is set to direct China’s biggest budget movie ever.
In collaboration with Publicity Department of Yunnan Provincial Party Committees and a joint Sino-US production, the 63 year old will have a budget of US$100 million at his disposal.
The story is about the alliance between China and the United States during World War II.
Specifically, it will be about the legendary US air squadron, the Flying Tigers, who alongside the Chinese against the enemies in WW2.
Shooting is scheduled in December, and will take place in several locations such as Kunming, Yunnan’s provincial capital, central China’s Hunan Province and northern China’s Henan Province.
John Woo’s last movie was the epic war film Red Cliff, based on an historical battle from Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Produced on a grand scale, Part 1 of the film was released throughout Asia in July, 2008, to skeptical and less than enthusiastic reviews and strong attendance.
Part 2 was released in China in January, 2009.
